Tropics coming alive?

Posted at 11:20 PM on August 03, 2009 Comments comments (0)

At this time the Atlantic basin is quiet, however over the next few days there is a good chance we will be tracking a tropical depression/storm. A tropical low pressure area is located out in the Central Atlantic marching westward towards the eastern Caribbean. Over the past 2 days I have been monitoring this area and it has become much better organized and seems to be closing off a circulation in the mid to low levels. No computer models are forecasting any development over the next few days but the conditions in the near future should allow this system to develop into a minimal tropical storm at the least. I believe our first named storm of the year will form no later than this weekend. I will have a more in-depth update Tuesday afternoon.

Elsewhere tropical development in the Atlantic basin is not expected for the next 72 hours.
